Item Artificially enhanced research : Free software and fantastic research(2008-09-23T16:48:56Z) Scott, DanThe free software community has developed a number of tools that are useful to researchers. This presentation introduces four tools: the LibX toolbar to extend library searching throughout your Web experience; the Zotero plug-in for collecting, organizing, and citing your research materials; the LU|ZONE|UL institutional repository built on DSpace for making your research openly accessible; and the quick lookup Linux laptops that have made quick searches fast and easy for library visitors and saved Laurentian University tens of thousands of dollars in hardware replacement costs.Item Canadian BIBFRAME Readiness Task Force survey instrument(2019-11-14) Scott, Dan; Fortier, Alexandre; Pretty, Heather; Spéciel, OlivierThis study aims to measure two aspects of Canadian libraries concerning the BIBFRAME bibliographic description model and vocabulary: 1) Measuring the level of understanding Canadian libraries currently have of BIBFRAME 2) Measuring how ready Canadian libraries are to transition from the MARC bibliographic format to BIBFRAME. The survey results will inform a list of recommendations for training, education and advocacy for Canadian libraries, as requested by the Canadian Federation of Library Associations-Cataloguing and Metadata Standards Committee (CFLA CMSC).Item Fac-Back-OPAC: An Open Source Interface to Your Library System(Computers in Libraries, 2007-10) Scott, Dan; Beccaria, MichaelThis article discusses the motivation for, history of, and capabilities of Fac-Back-OPAC, an alternative library catalogue built on open source technology.Item Microdata: making metadata matter(Evergreen International Conference, 2013-04-12) Scott, DanIn this session, Dan Scott (the contributor of the schema.org microdata enhancement for Evergreen and a participant in the schemabibex effort to extend schema.org to better support bibliographic data) will discuss the origins of the microdata standards, explain how nominally machine-readable cataloguing data can fit into the machine-actionable semantic web, reflect on the impact that a microdata-enabled catalogue has had at Laurentian University to date, and offer some thoughts about the future of microdata – including the schema.org and RDFa Lite standards.Item Project Conifer: Open source academic library system(2008-09-23T16:55:26Z) Scott, DanAn introduction to Project Conifer, the effort to bring the Evergreen open source library system from public libraries into Ontario's academic libraries. Dan Scott, project manager for Project Conifer, demonstrates the rationale behind the collaboration between Algoma University, Laurentian University, McMaster University, the Northern Ontario Health Integration Network (NOHIN), and the University of Windsor, and demonstrates the benefits Evergreen offers over our existing systems.Item Quick Lookup Laptops in the Library: Leveraging Linux with a SLAX LiveCD(The Code4Lib Journal, 2008-03-24) Scott, Dan; Beswick, KevinThis article discusses the experiences over the past year at Laurentian University in deploying a Linux live CD solution to create customized kiosk browsers on ‘quick lookup’ laptops. This provides security, reliability, ease of use, and improved response time compared to other options. We explain why we chose this solution, reveal techniques we used to achieve some of our goals, and reflect on possible future iterations of this project.Item Seeding Structured Data by Default via Open Source Library Systems(2014-03-20) Scott, DanMost libraries use the machine-readable cataloguing (MARC) format to encode and exchange metadata about the items they make available to their patrons. Traditional library systems have not published this data on the Semantic Web. However, some agile open source library systems have begun closing this gap by publishing structured data that uses the schema.org vocabulary to describe the bibliographic data, make offers for items available for loan, and link the items to their owning libraries. This article distills the lessons learned from implementing structured data in Evergreen, Koha, and VuFind; highlights emerging design patterns for publishing structured data in other library systems; and traces the influence these implementation experiences have had on the evolution of the schema.org vocabulary. Finally, we discuss the impact that “the power of the default” publishing of structured data could have on discoverability of library offerings on the Semantic Web.Item White Hat Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Structured Web Data for Libraries(Partnership: The Canadian Journal of Library and Information Practice and Research, 2015-06-30) Scott, Dan“White hat” search engine optimization refers to the practice of publishing web pages that are useful to humans, while enabling search engines and web applications to better understand the structure and content of your website. This article teaches you to add structured data to your website so that search engines can more easily connect patrons to your library locations, hours, and contact information. A web page for a branch of the Greater Sudbury Public Library retrieved in January 2015 is used as the basis for examples that progressively enhance the page with structured data. Finally, some of the advantages structured data enables beyond search engine optimization are explored.Item Wikidata for librarians: CAML 2017 preconference(2017-05-25) Scott, DanA presentation on editing Wikidata with a specific focus on musicians, bands, and music festivals. Presented at a preconference of the Canadian Association for Music Libraries, Archives, and Document Centres (CAML) 2017 conference in Toronto, Ontario.
