Abstract

This thesis explores how tacit knowledge shapes an architect’s expertise, critiques the limits of studio-based education, and highlights the benefits of design-build methods. This research aims to highlight the gap in architectural education regarding building site and construction knowledge. This work surveys the history of design-build pedagogy and provides a case study of Brian MacKay-Lyons' Ghost Labs. The thesis applies design-build methods in the adaptive re-use of a trailer / studio and the design and construction of a new wood frame cabin. The design-build process enables the discovery of tacit knowledge in the areas of immersive site analysis and building construction.
