Abstract
Although Canada is celebrated for its diverse natural landscapes, intentionally designed large- scale green spaces—where landscape is shaped architecturally rather than simply preserved—remain relatively uncommon. This thesis proposes a large-scale urban park that, through social interaction, cultural expression, and entertainment, could evolve into a vibrant community hub for Northern Ontario. Located on the former Burwash, Ontario prison site, the project employs an adaptive reuse strategy to revive the site’s abandoned architecture and deforested land into a contemporary park. Restorative green spaces will support environmental learning and nature-based recreation, enriching the site’s role as both an ecological and cultural destination.
Addressing Sudbury’s significant population of “gear-heads,” the park will provide a permanent home for motorsport-themed experiences as central activities. The park’s adaptability, temporality and evolving programming will position it as a recurring destination for enthusiasts, families, and neighbours alike. It will offer a place to adventure and create lasting memories.
