Abstract

With cases of autism on the rise, communities across Ontario are challenged with balancing support with numbers. In northern Ontario, the waitlist for autism diagnosis is especially long. As a result, there is need for accomodation while the person is waiting to be diagnosed With a focus on elements of texture, phenomenology, and furnishing, architecture can be a therapy tool to help people cope, and assist in transition from sensory-friendly environments. The research will show the benefits of the adaptive reuse of a building , as a place for an autistic occupant to excel. Specifically, the abandoned building of Ecole Saint Louis de Gonzague is investigated for its proximity to resources and its existing architectural style. This research will offer both a framework for designing a hotel, theatre and maker space program for autism, and will discuss the benefits of adapting a building’s story for the autistic user.
