Abstract
This thesis proposes the revitalization of Durham Street in the downtown Sudbury core. Using themes of urban regeneration, this thesis suggests a new build catalyst aimed to regenerate activity using abandoned buildings and adaptive reuse projects as accessory structures.
The thesis question, How can a catalyst building aid the study of existing site conditions and adaptive reuse projects, to allow for the successful urban regeneration of Durham Street within Sudbury’s downtown core?, aims to create a framework for the rejuvenation of Durham Street. Using theoretical frameworks, and the analysis of case studies, the formerly thriving part of the city may once again emerge as a vibrant and active urban space.
This research is situated in the downtown core of Sudbury, specifically on Durham street, and examines existing building conditions, site context and programmatic potential to identify opportunities for regeneration.
