A Corporate View of Housing and Community in a Company Town: Copper Cliff, 1886 to 1920.

Traces the development of the company town of Copper Cliff (now part of Sudbury), Ontario, to show how a corporation viewed the purpose of such a community and how it was used to meet company ends. Copper Cliff was a settlement around the copper mines of the Canadian Copper Company. A highly pragmatic solution to the problem of getting workers to resettle in out-of-the-way places, these towns usually had their houses, water and systems, schools, roads, stores, and entertainment centers built and financed by the primary company operating in the area. To the company, the housing and the town in general were investments, and also a 'tool' for controlling workers.

Census Returns on Microfilm

The Manuscript Census is a compilation of handwritten census documents, prepared by enumerators as they travelled from one dwelling to another. This, they did every ten years, covering the years from 1666 to 1901. The Public Archives of Canada has microfilmed these documents and made them available for public use. It is an important collection of primary source raw data.

It includes a wide variety of material from several levels of government and from intergovernmental organizations. As well, it includes a narrower selection of documentation from non-governmental agencies.

La formation à l’usage de l’information sur The Learning Manager (TLM)‏ : Un didacticiel accessible à tous!

Afin d'assurer le succès de leurs programmes de formation documentaire, les bibliothèques doivent maintenant s'adapter à une clientèle universitaire hétérogène, limitée dans ses déplacements par l'emploi du temps ou autres raisons et qui requière des moyens d'apprentissages flexibles, accessibles de n'importe où et à toute heure. Afin de répondre à ces nouveaux défis, la Bibliothèque J.N Desmarais de l'Université Laurentienne a développé un programme de formation documentaire totalement informatisé et supporté par le logiciel didactique TLM (The Learning Manager). Comme d'autres didactitiels, ce programme permet d'acquérir les rudiments indispensables à la recherche documentaire dans un environnement hautement interactif de mises en situation, d'exercices et même d'examens de passage. Cependant, TLM a été retenu surtout en raison de quatre de ses fonctions uniques : 1) sa structure modulaire qui guide l'usager à travers les activités d'apprentissage et les tests d'un cours, 2) ses outils de gestion des dossiers étudiants, 3) ses capacités particulièrement sophistiquées de créer des tests, 4) sa fonction permettant l'intégration de programmes.
Elder Abuse: A Bibliographic Investigation

Over the past few months, I have been assembling a bibliography on elder abuse that will soon be published on the Web site of the Ontario Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (www.onpea.org). I brought to this inquiry the tools I developed a decade ago during a sabbatical I spent developing subject-literature expertise in gerontology. That study was focussed exclusively on the print literature. Today, however, no bibliography would be complete without addressing the multifaceted nature of communication. Not only is there the traditional “hard copy” bibliography, there are videos, the Internet, and even the telephone. (Phone Busters, operated by the Ontario Provincial Police, does research on telemarketing scams and seniors.) I should emphasize this bibliography is not meant to be comprehensive, but a “brief bibliography” along the lines of the excellent series published by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education.

Quick Lookup Laptops in the Library: Leveraging Linux with a SLAX LiveCD

This article discusses the experiences over the past year at Laurentian University in deploying a Linux live CD solution to create customized kiosk browsers on ‘quick lookup’ laptops. This provides security, reliability, ease of use, and improved response time compared to other options. We explain why we chose this solution, reveal techniques we used to achieve some of our goals, and reflect on possible future iterations of this project.

Artificially enhanced research : Free software and fantastic research

The free software community has developed a number of tools that are useful to researchers. This presentation introduces four tools: the LibX toolbar to extend library searching throughout your Web experience; the Zotero plug-in for collecting, organizing, and citing your research materials; the LU|ZONE|UL institutional repository built on DSpace for making your research openly accessible; and the quick lookup Linux laptops that have made quick searches fast and easy for library visitors and saved Laurentian University tens of thousands of dollars in hardware replacement costs.
Project Conifer: Open source academic library system

An introduction to Project Conifer, the effort to bring the Evergreen open source library system from public libraries into Ontario's academic libraries. Dan Scott, project manager for Project Conifer, demonstrates the rationale behind the collaboration between Algoma University, Laurentian University, McMaster University, the Northern Ontario Health Integration Network (NOHIN), and the University of Windsor, and demonstrates the benefits Evergreen offers over our existing systems.
