Copper Cliff was a settlement around the copper mines of the Canadian Copper Company. A highly pragmatic solution to the problem of getting workers to resettle in out-of-the-way places, these towns usually had their houses, water and systems, schools, roads, stores, and entertainment centers built and financed by the primary company operating in the area. To the company, the housing and the town in general were investments, and also a 'tool' for controlling workers.Item The Bibliography of Northern Ontario / La bibliographie du nord de l'Ontario(Dundurn Press Limited, Toronto, Ontario, 1994) Thomson, Ashley; Hallsworth, Gwenda; Bonin, LionelItem Huntington Recital Series, 1995-1996(1995-10-29) Maley, DesmondPerformers: Desmond Maley, piano (first half); Leng Zi, violin; Zhou Zhihua, violoncello; and Paul Ellis, piano (second half). This, they did every ten years, covering the years from 1666 to 1901. The Public Archives of Canada has microfilmed these documents and made them available for public use. It is an important collection of primary source raw data.Item Handbook of Canadian Boarding Schools(Dundurn Press, 1999) Thomson, Ashley; Lafortune, SylviePrivate schools have frequently provided innovative, experimental, and creative program unavailable to students in the public system. The most successful have survived and expanded by offering an educational experience widely perceived to be not just as good as that available in the public system, but better. In Canada, private schools are enjoying an unprecedented popularity and while most are day-only, over sixty sustain boarding programs, as do two off-shore Canadian schools. The Handbook of Canadian Boarding Schools presents information on the educational environment of each province, then offers comparative information on each boarding school. The information on each school includes: basic data, location, history, philosophy, the campus, boarding facilities, health and safety, administration and faculty, student body and student conduct, academic calendar and program, information technology, student activities and student conduct, admission and costs. The Handbook also supplies several appendices outlining important programs often available through boarding schools, such as Advanced Placement courses and the International Baccalaureate. For parents in Canada and abroad about to commit substantial sums to their children''s education, the Handbook of Canadian Boarding Schools is an essential tool to help them make the right decision. It is also an indispensable resource for supporters of the public system looking for ideas that have worked elsewhere. Desmarais Library is the largest collection of primary source material in Northern Ontario. It includes a wide variety of material from several levels of government and from intergovernmental organizations. As well, it includes a narrower selection of documentation from non-governmental agencies. Item Elder Abuse: A Bibliographic Investigation(Ontario Elder Abuse Conference, 2002-11-19) Maley, DesmondOver the past few months, I have been assembling a bibliography on elder abuse that will soon be published on the Web site of the Ontario Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (www.onpea.org). I brought to this inquiry the tools I developed a decade ago during a sabbatical I spent developing subject-literature expertise in gerontology. That study was focussed exclusively on the print literature. Today, however, no bibliography would be complete without addressing the multifaceted nature of communication. Not only is there the traditional “hard copy” bibliography, there are videos, the Internet, and even the telephone. (Phone Busters, operated by the Ontario Provincial Police, does research on telemarketing scams and seniors.) I should emphasize this bibliography is not meant to be comprehensive, but a “brief bibliography” along the lines of the excellent series published by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education.Item Points de vue sur Internet (1990-2002)(Acfas-Sudbury, 2005) Lafortune, SylvieItem Utilisation d'Internet et les relations sociales(Université Laval. This provides security, reliability, ease of use, and improved response time compared to other options. We explain why we chose this solution, reveal techniques we used to achieve some of our goals, and reflect on possible future iterations of this project.Item Building an institutional repository at Laurentian University.(2008-03-29T19:29:20Z) Lafortune, SylviePresentation on LU institutional repository pilot project at Technology for Teaching, Learning and Research, Laurentian University, February 28, 2007.Item Artificially enhanced research : Free software and fantastic research(2008-09-23T16:48:56Z) Scott, DanThe free software community has developed a number of tools that are useful to researchers. This presentation introduces four tools: the LibX toolbar to extend library searching throughout your Web experience; the Zotero plug-in for collecting, organizing, and citing your research materials; the LU|ZONE|UL institutional repository built on DSpace for making your research openly accessible; and the quick lookup Linux laptops that have made quick searches fast and easy for library visitors and saved Laurentian University tens of thousands of dollars in hardware replacement costs.Item Project Conifer: Open source academic library system(2008-09-23T16:55:26Z) Scott, DanAn introduction to Project Conifer, the effort to bring the Evergreen open source library system from public libraries into Ontario's academic libraries. Dan Scott, project manager for Project Conifer, demonstrates the rationale behind the collaboration between Algoma University, Laurentian University, McMaster University, the Northern Ontario Health Integration Network (NOHIN), and the University of Windsor, and demonstrates the benefits Evergreen offers over our existing systems.
