Item River channels and beach ridges: an archaeological survey of the Mississagi Delta(Laurentian University, 1975-01-01) Brizinski, MorrisAn archaeological survey of the Mississagi Delta was undertaken in the fall of 1975. This survey, in conjunction with the surveys carried out by Dr. J. Wright (National Museum) in 1961, 1964, 1968 and Professor Helen Devereux, (Laurentian University), in 1962, 1963, will indicate the archaeological potential of this area.Item The Renard Site, Fox Island, Mississagi Delta, Algoma : a preliminary report on a terminal Woodland site(Laurentian University, 1977-01-01) Bertulli, M.; Kilpatrick, L.The Renard Site, CbHs-5, is located o n the northeastern shore of Fox Island in the Mississagi River Delta, Cobden Township, Blind River District. The specific area of the site is designated as 46°11' latitude and 83°2' longitude. (Brizinski 1975, P.71). Excavation was undertaken in the autumn of 1975 by a crew of Laurentian University students with the direction of Professor Helen Devereux and Morris Brizinski and under the auspices of the Ontario Ministries of Culture and Recreation and Natural Resources.Item Ceramics, chert and culture: an analysis of three prehistoric sites located in the Michipicoten Area(Laurentian University, Sudbury, Ontario, 1977-01-01) Brizinski, Morris J.; Buchanan, Kenneth T.This report is the result of a theoretical study of three sites which are located in the region adjacent to the mouth of the Michipicoten River in Northern Ontario. Two of the sites are early Initial Woodland, Laurel Culture occupations, while the third is a Terminal Woodland Algonkian Site. In addition to the individual site reports, three chapters are devoted to specific aspects of the occupation: adaptation to the environment, the impact of pottery and the pattern of subsistence. The underlying theme is cultural conservatism.Item Eldorado on the Mississagi: an evaluation of cultural resources on the Eldorado Nuclear Ltd. property near Blink River, Ontario(Archéologie illimités inc., 1980-01-01) Buchanan, K.; Bertulli, M.; Chism, J.In the fall of 1980, Archaeology Unlimited was awarded the task of evaluating the cultural resources associated with the property on with Eldorado nuclear Ltd was constructing a uranium hexafluouride refinery on the north shore of Lake Huron near Blink River, Ontario (figure 1). The evaluation was contracted for those parts of the property not already disturbed by early stages of construction. These stages included: construction of the access road; and land clearing at the sites of the refinery, construction camp and parking areas. A gravel quarry had been opened and landfill operations were underway in a marsh. A number of land depositions and further developments are being considered for other parts of the property. Therefore, it is appropriate that an inventory should be made even at this late stage, so that future decisions may consider cultural resources among others. This report presents the results of the evaluation. As proposed, the study includes a review of existing literature concerning fieldwork undertaken by prehistorians as well as archival documents and both written and oral local histories concerning 19th and 20th century activities. It also presents results of our own field explorations and attempts to set the whole into a developmental and environmental framework.
