The dissertation addresses the importance of utilizing Critical Discourse Analysis and Framing theory when consuming any information. In my analysis I will conduct a content analysis and a systematic test of verification to verify the accuracy of the seven NAFTA "Myth vs. Reality" statements on the official NAFTA website, NAFTAnow.org. In addition to this, I will also critically analyze the "Myth vs. Reality Model" used to present the seven claims. The importance of questing power and authority, to uncover hidden ideologies, is pivotal to obtaining clarity in text. The application of systematically verifying discourse shows the true essence of information and can expose empty claims. This is important in daily encounters with information and essential when conducting research. The emergence of Ontario microbreweries: a socio-historical analysis(Laurentian University of Sudbury, 2014-07-02) Roche, Kevin JamesSince the 1980s microbreweries in Ontario have gained in popularity, winning over beer drinkers in the province and earning the support of the provincial government that funds the expansion of this creative industry. The Emergence of Ontario Microbreweries, adopting the theoretical perspectives of Margaret Archer and Michel Foucault, looks at the factors explaining the emergence of the craft beer industry. Through the morphogenetic approach, which sees enablements take shape through entrepreneurial pursuits, and disenablements through Foucauldian disciplinary processes, we observe that Ontario microbreweries were constrained by strict government laws. Enforced by the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), these laws acted upon the individuals and their ability to consume alcohol both privately and publicly. Over time, the strict governmental regimes which constrained beer drinkers and micro-brewed beer producers gradually transformed to allow for the expansion of microbreweries that create unique, distinct and authentic products that have specific geographic links to community.Item Ethos and entertainment: the mass migration to virtual world(Laurentian University of Sudbury, 2014-08-11) Angi, Ethan Aaron JohnThis thesis aims to examine Western culture and its relationship to virtual worlds. The goal is to provide readers with a better understanding of the relationships between individuals and virtual reality, as well as how these relationships may influence our society. This understanding is explored in three chapters; the first examines several psychology articles on video games and virtual worlds and how they impact individuals; the second explores the social impacts of a rise in virtual reality as a primary actor in many individuals lives; the third chapter focuses on the individual and how the introduction of virtual worlds has changed the ways individuals interact. I used discourse analysis under the framework of interpretive policy analysis in order to critically analyze documents reflecting college-university articulation policies in Ontario, from 1962 to 2000. Interpretive policy analysis has been applied as a research method to provide: a) a chronological overview of the data, and b) an analysis of the new vocational discourse. Using a neo-Marxist lens, I investigate the larger political and economic influences that have shaped postsecondary policies under the ‘new vocationalism,’ including key concepts such as capitalism, hegemony, and alienation. I assert that articulation agreements - influenced by new vocational discourses - were deliberately implemented by the government of Ontario since the 1960s, in order to reorient post-secondary education to the marketplace and fulfill the needs of the ‘new knowledge economy.’Item Gendering social relations of work in the Canadian automotive industry: an autoethnographic study.(Laurentian University of Sudbury, 2014-07-15) Starr, MeaganThis paper is an analysis of my gendered experiences working in the male-dominated industry of automotive manufacturing. My objective was to explore and critically analyze the gendered relations that I experienced while working in the contemporary automotive industry. Women working in male-dominated professions and environments often face circumstances that are unique to their male counterparts (Acker, 2006; Gottfried, 2013). The nature of the social relations affects women’s integration and potential success in male-dominated professions (Acker, 2006; Gottfried, 2013). The purpose of this research was to explore the challenges that I experienced as a woman working within a male-dominated profession. This was an exploratory qualitative study which was conducted through the method of autoethnography. An investigation and examination of my journal allowed for me to select important themes that represented the gender relations I experienced in the workplace. The main findings indicated that while working in male-dominated profession I experienced a host of challenges that were inherent in my work setting. The main challenges were as follows: 1) negotiating dominant forms of masculinity, 2) gender stereotyping/gender role expectations, 3) sexual harassment, and 4) the ways in which women’s bodies were considered suspect. I adopt several concepts/ideas from feminist political theoretical perspectives as well as other literature to analyze these themes. There were a variety of different concepts and theories that could assist in explaining why I was treated in an oppressive and dominating fashion. These concepts were as follows: 1) hegemonic masculinity, 2) gendered division of labour, 3) gendered hierarchies at work, and 4) embodied labour and bodies at work (Acker, 2006; Bakker & Gill, 2003; Bird, 1996; Connell, 1995; Gottfried, 2013).Item Historique du bilinguisme à l'Université Laurentienne(Institut franco-ontarien Université Laurentienne, 1985) Dennie, DonaldItem How school generated funding reinforces a two-tier education system in Ontario(Laurentian University of Sudbury, 2014-05-23) Pizzoferrato, SherellThis thesis examines School Generated Funding (SGF) within the Toronto District School (TDSB) to see if SGF is reinforcing a two-tier education system. Five sources of data were analyzed: The SGF Record of the TDSB from 2008-2009, The Preliminary School Budget from 2010-2011, EQAO test results from 2008 to 2009, The Learning Opportunity Index (LOI) from 2009, and three socio-economic status factors (income, education and occupation) using the Toronto Wards Profiles. Using the SGF record, twenty green schools (schools that raised the most SGF, amounting to $4,043,837) were compared, using the five sources of data against twenty red schools (schools that raised the least amount of SGF, amounting to $109,885). Two recommendations have been suggested: SGF be capped at a median amount throughout the TDSB and extra funding be put into a funding account for the TDSB to disperse to schools that need it.Item Human health and environmental risk assessments: politics or science?(2019-04-01) Montgomery, AllanHuman Health and Environmental Risk Assessments are being used by both governments and industries to determine whether or not existing and/or proposed pollution levels are safe for human populations and/or the natural environment. My personal experiences with a “Community Based Risk Assessment” in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, left me rather doubtful as to the validity of both the science involved and the level of community involvement in the process. After meeting other people who had participated in the same kind of process in other communities, I came to the conclusion that these three risk assessments needed to be analyzed and chronicled, not only for historical purposes, but as a reference to how the process was carried out in the three communities in question: Sudbury and Port Colborne, Ontario, and Belledune, New Brunswick. The risk assessment in Sudbury, Ontario, resulted in the highest permissible levels of ambient nickel air pollution in the province to become the norm only for Sudbury. Of note, extensive water pollution of multiple heavy metals was left out, at the insistence of the mining industry polluters, who not only funded the process, but were allowed to be involved. The Government of Canada would later charge one of the polluters, Vale, for allowing exactly this kind of pollution to occur. Areas of the Belledune fishery are now unfit for human consumption after being subjected to “risk free” pollution; however, rather than close the lobster fishery, all lobsters caught within a 4-mile radius of the smelter in Belledune, are bought by the polluter, and then incinerated, rather than face the public relations fallout of having to close the fishery. Another case in point concerning contamination levels being increased to match local levels, as opposed to recognized standards, is the case of the nuclear accident in Fukushima, Japan. The accident occurred while research into the three CBRAs mentioned was being carried out.
